Here are the most important safety tips:
- Helmet - Always insist that the child wear a helmet while riding their bike for safety. It is advisable to invest in a good quality helmet and insist your children wear it from the beginning. It is also good to buy quality knee pads and gloves too. Never let your children get on the bicycle without these and a pair of shoes on, even if you are around supervision.
- Always insist your children stop at the end of the driveway - Most children just zoom off once they have straddled their cycles, they are already out into the road in a twinkling. The danger in this is that there could be a car coming unaware of a child appearing out of the driveway. This has been one the major reasons of the most number of bike accidents. Therefore, teach the child to stop at the driveway and check for incoming traffic before he or she gets out on their bicycle.
- Teach them to ride their bike with the traffic - Most countries have a dedicated lane for bicycles, but some do not. The safest method to avoid mishaps of this kind is to ride along in the direction of the traffic.
- Teach basic hand signals - Hand signals are not easy to teach to children so one can incorporate a fun activity like a bike race. They are essential when the child grows older and starts to move by themselves for if the motorist knows what the child is going to do next, it can actually prevent a lot of accidents.
- For toddler, who are just learning to ride a bicycle, never ever let them out of sight. Always keep the gate closed and mark out a perimeter where they are allowed to go. With a toddler bike safety is a great concern. The danger is that toddler bicycles do not have brakes so if there is a sloping surface, the tricycle will pick up speed and there is a huge chance of it toppling over or coasting in to dangerous street.
- Teach them basic traffic rules for greater bike safety - one should teach your childen basic traffic rules and also to obey them. They should learn to stop at red lights, stop signs, watch if they are riding their bike on the wrong side etc. bicycle safety around car is a huge issue because often drivers do not see small children.
- Never speed up in front of a parked car - Parked cars are often more dangerous than people think for a driver can back up suddenly or might open a door causing collisions that could have been avoided. Children must be instructed to keep a minimum of three foot distance from any parked vehicle to avoid this kind of mishap.
- Children should always save bike stunts and bicycle tricks for the playground. Bicycle stunts are the largest cause of accident due to a lack of safety. Children should be discouraged from tagging behind vehicles like cars and trucks.
